Professional Development Program

2-5 year Professional Development Plan

To keep up to date with my professional development as an up and coming information professionals, specifically a librarian, I aim to –

  • Join and maintain ALIA membership (Australian Library and Information Association) and contribute to their online community and New Graduates Group
  • Join and maintain Public Libraries Australia membership

To remain up to date with the information industry I aim to –

  • Regularly read journals such as Advances in Librarianship, e-On-The Internet, Issues in Sciences and Technical Librarianships and Information Technology and Libraries
  • Subscribe to SLAQ quarterly newsletter (this area interests me and by staying informed with this type of library I can establish if this area would suit me)
  • Continue to participate in professional development activities at QUT Library to expand my current skill set
  • Check Informed Librarian Online to find up to date, interesting and relevant journals

It is hard to say at this stage what events I expect to be attending in the next 2-5 years as I am not sure what my schedule will be, where I will be situated and what events will be available. I aim to go to several events a year in order to maintain industry contacts and stay up to date with the librarian and information and technology industries. I envisage attending seminars, conferences and courses relating to –

  • New information technologies that are/will be available in libraries
  • Cataloging  processes and management
  • Computer and website design and management

Statement of My Career Goals

5 YEAR CAREER GOALS STATEMENT:

  • To have a fulfilling career as a librarian and information professional

THINGS I HAVE DONE TOWARDS THIS:

  • Worked 1 semester as a Collections Access Assistant at QUT Gardens Point Library
  • Worked 1 semester casually as a Library Adviser, main focus on virtual reference & desk queries at QUT Gardens Point Library
  • Secured 2 casual contracts to continue work as a Library Adviser & Peer Adviser at QUT Gardens Point Library
  • Secured an ongoing position as a Part Time Library Adviser at QUT Law Library
  • Secured a fixed term contract to work at Queensland State Archives
  • Completed my Masters in Information and Technology with a major in Librarianship

MEANS TO ATTAINING MY GOALS:

  • After completing my Masters I aim to work for at least 5 years at a challenging Learning and Information Service position where I can use and enhance my skills and knowledge.

DURING THESE 5 YEARS I AIM TO:

  • Learn and grow as an information provider.
  • Communicate within the industry to develop and maintain my network.
